Steve laughs at the joke. Doubles up even. "Okay, okay, enough of that. But if you don't mind me asking, what life did you lead prior to this one? You are obviously well trained and have a good head on your shoulders in a fight."

[Not intended to be joking, but I'll go with it.]

The room grows silent. The former pirate was hoping he could pass over it with "nevermind that". "I didn't fight for anything good. I took the wrong jobs, worked with the wrong people. It was a long time before I found myself paying the price," he turns the scarred side of his face toward Steve, "but I did pay. I'm...making it my mission to ensure the world drops it for good."
If it wasn't, the joke is now officially canon.

"About me, huh? Well, I guess I don't mind telling you, so long as it gets buried again."

"I was like you once. Young, eager, full of promise. I know, I'm not old yet. When I went to one of Myr's port towns for the summer solstice, I met a crew of sailors licking wounds and looking for recruits. I took my time enjoying the celebration, then a day later asked them how long they'd be in town. 'Sunrise', said one who spoke my tongue. Not enough time for me to head back to my clan, pack what I thought I'd need, and then return to cast off with them."

"Saying goodbye to my family was a difficult thing. They told me to wait, give them more time with me before I left, a week at least. But there was something about that crew, that ship. Maybe it was just the call of adventure, maybe I was just tired of the same old drudgery. Maybe I was a seaman at heart, feeling the pull of that vast, open sea. Whatever it was, I followed it onto that ship, and from that day forward I knew a freedom so true I don't ever want stay away for long."

"I lost the good thing I had going when I paid the price for my misdeeds. Not long after that, Coins members found me, throwing back shots to drown my sorrow and picking fights. The latest one involved discovering my attempt at forging my tab to put my drinking debt onto someone else. I could have run, but...I didn't have my head. I didn't last long in any of those fights, but the Coins had my back in that one. They must have seen the fire in me. And so, the circle is complete."

"Say, you and I should get ourselves a ship. Our crew can help us when our assignments lead us into fights, and we can take on bigger jobs - move goods for the Coins, escort trading vessels, all that good privateer work for our employers."
Say hello to the bullshit story.

"Wow. I've never even thought about being part of a ship's crew!" The way his face lights up, you can see that Steve is rather taken with the idea. He starts spitting questions a mile a minute. "What do you eat on ships? Will I need new clothes? How do ropes work? I hear storms are a thing, how's that? Is it true sailors have lots of STDs? Do you have lots of STDs?"

"All right, all right," Konrad says, waving his hands. "I could teach you to handle the ropes. I do better showing instead of explaining, but it's tough work, just a fair warning. I don't have any STD, and I don't presume to know how many any of my crew had - except...Thorald." The name rolls off his tongue with minor discomfort. "If anyone has a 'problem', we go see a white mage. Expensive treatment, but obviously worth it. You could wear whatever you want within reason, and generally, you want preserved foodstuffs - if it goes down better than 'had better', it's probably not what you're looking for. Visits to the mainland are the best days of your life."

"Indeed, storms are a thing, quite terrible. Deadly, even for a crew prepared for horrible weather."

"Yes, I think that's for the best." Steve downs the rest of his wine and makes a sour face after doing so. "Heh, I hate doing that. Drinking it so fast makes it sour."

He'll see Konrad and Breeze out and then hit the hay until it's time to go. It's not like he has a lot to pack anyway.

Uh, well I'm hurting for something to do.

Doubtful that the town may have heard anything interesting, Konrad nevertheless visits with the townsfolk (preferably the patrons and travelers, if they are gathered somewhere drinking or still hanging around) to ply them for gossip

Konrad meets only a couple of people who have gathered to discuss the recent tragedy that befell the village. When asked about other news, the villagers tell Konrad that they've heard some talks about the Golden Legion (one of the three main mercenaries companies in the Archipelago) pulling from one of their base within the Free Feathers for some financial reason. Also, a merchant ship that made port at Highwind was attacked by pirates on their way there, but they managed to have repelled the attack. Konrad listen to the other news they've heard about, but Konrad can tell these are normal and not really worth mentioning.

Well hang on, I know what I need to do.

Konrad goes looking for Velstar to find out whether Saemon's condition has improved. In context with how much he knows(see below), Konrad will ask her what the Madness is, and how people with magical madness change when they are afflicted.

He will ask her where Calla, Molly, and Sonlake(that's all of them, right?) are staying. When he's done asking questions, he'll visit Saemon's house to see him.

From the document I linked;

Madness:

Velstar was in fact talking to Tom Blackcliff, and she reveals that she just asked him to escort her and Saemon to Highwind, where mages will handle his transfer to the nearest asylum. The warden sombrely explains that Saemon is suffering from a severe case of madness, and he won't be coming back from it. She had to force a drug down his throat to put him to sleep, and his sister is now looking over him. Velstar would prefer if Konrad left them alone.

As for the alleged thieves, no one has seen them since Mihai has come back in town with them. Blackcliff shares his suspicions that they've decided to leave Waterglass after burying their dead.

The three of you are woken up around 5:00 AM by one of Blackcliff's men knocking on your door. He simply tell you that your group is leaving in half an hour; prepare accordingly and meet up with the rest of the group in front of the inn.

If you immediately go there, you'll see that a cart has been prepared, and all the horses are already saddled (including the ones the party members used to get to Waterglass). Blackcliff and Velstar are speaking in hushed tones with each other, and the rest of the commander's party are looking over an unconscious Saemon, who has been laid down into the cart.

Having fallen tucked in after running out of wine, Konrad cradles his head from another pounding headache, reeking of the alcohol he drank the day before. The hangover was bearable, as far as drinking steadily from a bottle of wine. Not as bad as yesterday's. Understandably, he doesn't have the patience to don his polite, friendly veneer. "Alright alright, message received, now get out."

Konrad will stow the scented candles in his bag of holding.

He takes a minute to gather his strength and visits the men's bath to clean up, then visits the bar to grab two bottles of ale, a loaf of bread, and two hunk of meat and cheese each, and a to-go sack or something, all for the bag of holding.

He will then place 2 cupcakes in the bag he bought, and go straight to the Coins' cart.

"Blackcliff, you said the contract is null, but Marie Lavoie is dead. She won't be needing reimbursement for the money she put down for our payment."

"She doesn't need the money she put down to hire the deceased adjunct, either..."

Diplomacy
Whatever the previous adjunct was being paid, we should get that too, because they're dead now. It is her money, and she is dead...

Tom Blackcliff, who is now standing alone in front of the inn, turns towards Konrad when he approaches him. The commander initially nods at the red mage, understanding his concerns over the matter of the payment, but his behavior changes when Konrad mentions the deceased adjunct. He stays silent for a long moment, his cold glare fixated on Konrad. Then, with an icy tone, he stoically replies, "The 5th Adjunct was going to be paid with the money you were promised for this mission. As a reward for your astounding performance, you will also receive the bonus that your handler has discussed with you and your comrades; that is, unless you keep desecrating the memory of my friends."

His stare lingers on the mage.

"Anything else, private?"
