| Mihai talks to Molly to hear her side. She explains it tersely, and then he checks up on Saemon, who has--surprise--one ill with Madness. - Their Side + Saemon's Fate (Mihai, Molly, Velstar, Saemon etc):
Mihai cannot find Molly in the village, and after asking a few villagers about her location, one of them tells him that she went with the members of the militia to gather the bodies left at the fort.
If he chooses to go there, he will see Molly, the other thieves and the militia putting the burned corpses on a cart. After a short examination, Mihai realizes that they've already carried Fredrick's, his colleague's and Lloyd's bodies to the village; they're not being particularly respectful with the others.
They glance at Mihai, then immediately return their attention to the task at hand.
Mihai approaches Molly.
"Hey." - he greets, taking in the general dour mood - "I talked to the... Commander. You've been cleared of all charges. The Coins won't try to apprehend you."
Molly and one of her colleagues have just finished putting the last corpse on the cart. She glances at Mihai, then replies, "Is that so?"
The others are a little surprised, but they don't say anything and just start pulling the cart down the path. Molly stays behind with Mihai, takes a rag out of her pocket and begins cleaning her hands.
"I guess we'll be on our way once we've buried our friends."
"Yeah..." - he replies - "Listen, I...." - he fumbles for the words - "Fredrick didn't even hesitate to charge at the Oracle. You guys could have ran, and I wouldn't have blamed you. I don't know if my thanks mean anything, but... yeah."
Molly continues to clean her hands, quietly. After a moment of reflection, she replies, "Fredrick and Joseph are the only ones who deserve any thanks. The rest of us were just doing our jobs."
Mihai stays in quiet acknowledgement for a bit, then asks - "Molly, could you tell me your side of the story in all this?"
Molly shrugs. "We were hired to steal the journal of that bitch, we found that fairy on the job, we came here to meet the client, the fairy escaped, and you know the rest."
She looks back at the fort.
"I should've chopped her head off the moment i started suspecting. Probably wouldn't have mattered, but..." - he trails off, then catches himself. - "Anyway, i'll help you guys with this, long as i'm here."
It takes a while for her to respond, as her attention seems to have been absorbed by the fort. She shakes her head.
"Sure, we brought shovels." She starts walking. "A ditch will be enough for these bastards."
After being helped Molly and the others leave Mihai near the center of the plaza. The disheveled woman nods at the mercenary, then walks towards the inn along with her colleagues.
Mihai makes for the house Saemon was brought to, and just as he reaches the porch, he hears a man screaming from the inside. Then another voice, one's which seems to be Velstar's, soon follows.
"Hold your grip! Don't let him move!"
Hearing the screaming coming from Saemon's house, Mihai goes in. He sees Amelia and Ovalen - the scout who gave an update on the fort earlier this morning and who went to sleep after that- holding Saemon down on a chair. The shackles on his wrists are glowing, and they're not going to dim any sooner; Saemon is screaming with rage at everyone. Velstar is trying to force him to swallow something.
"His mouth! Hold his mouth!" - yells the warden.
"We can't!" replies Ovalen, in panic.
Mihai rushes in and holds his mouth. The three of them are a little surprised at Mihai's appearance, but they are also relieved by it. Velstar now pours some blue liquid into the young man's throat, on which he violently gurgles, spattering everyone with it. It takes less than a minute for the drug to do its work; Saemon is now uncounscious again. Amelia and Ovalen are in shock. Velstar cleans her face off with her sleeve.
Once Saemon stops thrashing, Mihai turns to Velstar - "Talk to me...!"
She glares at him, then calmly explains. "This is a severe case of Madness. He won't come back from it."
Mihai freezes, then hangs his head. Amelia looks for a chair, stumbles a little, until Ovalen helps her sit down. Velstar is observing Saemon with cold eyes. She leaves the room, searches through a chest, and brings back some ropes. Amelia can only look away as the warden ties up her brother. The old woman approaches Amelia, then softly says, - "We cannot let him stay here; I'll have to bring him to the asylum, first thing in the morning. Do you understand?"
Amelia nods.
"He should stay asleep for at least twelve hours. I'll come back later." Ovalen assures her with a nod of his head that he will look after the young woman. Velstar turns around, takes Mihai by his arm, and forces him to follow her and step outside the house. He doesn't resist.
Once they're in the street, they see that a small gathering has formed. The expression on Velstar's face must say it all, as they don't even ask any question. She lets go of Mihai's arm, then starts walking north, unfazed by all the looks people give her.
Mihai stays frozen in place for a few minutes, then sits down on the nearest bench-like surface, slouched over.

| Steve finds Calla to give her his sympathies and shares her opinion on his dubious teammate. - The Thief's Respite (Steve and Calla):
Calla is sitting alone on a bench, away from other people. The villagers are too preoccupied to look after her. She is staring into space, and will give only a brief look at Steve when he approaches her.
Steve won't say anything. He'll sit down next to her and take her hand. He'll give it a squeeze and he'll sit there with her for as long as she wants.
She is surprised by Steve's gesture, and it shows on her face. She turns away, unable to look at him, but doesn't let go of his hand. A few minutes pass before she say anything.
"You know I wanted you to find it, right?"
He nods. "Did you let Breeze the fairy out of her cage too?"
There is a short pause, then Calla slowly nods. "Please don't tell the others. They all think she escaped by herself."
"I promise." And he means it. He looks down. "I'm so sorry I couldn't save your dad. I tried to get everyone away but she wouldn't agree. She wouldn't agree. Why didn't she agree?"
His rambling is cut off by a sob.
This surprises Calla; she wasn't expecting to see this side of Steve. Strangely enough, it appears to relieve her own grief. She intertwines her fingers with Steve's, and doesn't say any other word.
Steve is content to sit in a companionable silence with her until its time for that drink with Konrad.
"I could use a drink, how about you?"
She shakes her head. "I don't feel like drinking."
"Mmm. I'm meeting my comrade Konrad for one in a few minutes."
She doesn't respond for a few seconds. "The creepy one, huh?"
Steve laughs. "Yeah, that guy."
She struggles for words, but opts to stay silent. It's clear she doesn't like Konrad.
"Yeah, I know. But I thought I'd give him a chance. Take a measure of the man. He's good in a fight but I don't trust him."
"Dad could tell; he smiles too much."
"I noticed. It's...unnerving. I'm not sure I've ever seen the real him and I don't know if I want to."
There is a short pause. She nods, then says, "Be careful then."
"Of course." Steve squeezes her hand and then stands up. "Later."
He walks away to make his meeting with Konrad.

| Konrad looks for Eralda, cries crocodile tears for her, and returns to the inn to meet up with Steve. - La Valse a Mille Temps (Konrad, Breeze, Jacques Brel):
"Wonderful." He dons his ample cloak and pulls the hood over his head. "Climb inside. Now, can you explain to me how these love orbs are made? It's not something any normal human can make."Steve would have heard this as they parted. With her tucked away inside his hood, he'll go to the inn partition where his room was rented(freely), but not before grabbing some drinks at the bar(imagining that each building has a bar and lobby - if not, the main building w/bar first, then to my room). " Love globules." She isn't pleased. A little annoyed, she explains. " I just raise my arms, create a big ball of light, and when I'm done, I put my feelings into it. Simple!" There are two villagers in the main building, and they have been appointed as temporary innkeepers. They explain that they haven't washed the floor yet, and Konrad will notice a pool of blood behind the counter. If he asks them whether he can take a bottle of alcohol or not, they will agree with a grim expression on their faces. They will also give him another room, since Eralda was killed in the one he slept in last night, and tell him that the bodies of the recently deceased were brought to the city hall until a funeral can be held. Konrad can tell by the way Breeze stays still that she doesn't like what she hears. Konrad will take two of something strong then, and four tankards to go with. "So you keep insisting. 'Globule' is such a cumbersome word, don't you think? Hmm, have you tried this thing called 'Weaving'? Whatever this phenomenon is that allows you to project pure elemental energy must work in tandem with the ability to Weave, since you also create a physical object you can store elements inside. What would happen if it broke? I'm sure Steve is chomping at the bit to find out, so we may need you to do it again. For science."" Uh... I don't know what would happen if it broke. But I'm not going to make another one just because you ask; you gotta earn it!" "Well, can you Weave another love globule for Yen?" It's implied he wants to break that, as though what he's asking is of no significance to her. " She already has a love globule! No need to giver her another one, you doofus." She then pats Konrad on the ear, as if she pitied him. He shrugs. "This 'doofus' never said she needed another one... Anyway, it makes one wonder who that amazing globule we just handed off to Tom belongs to. Might have something to do with what Marie Lavoie - or that Elemental who was with her - could have wanted with you. It might be something in direct competition with the plans of whomever the Coins are working for...in conflict with the Enclave, perhaps? Eh, no matter, we're rid of her, right? that's what matters."She continues to listen, and the expression on her face hardens when Konrad mentions Marie Lavoie. "She was a lot meaner than I thought. I hope everybody forgets about her!" she says like if she just spelled a curse. He yammers on as they move on to the city hall about what gear she wants, where she'll find clothes, if she's any good in a martial confrontation, and how she'll carry it - she'll probably push most of what she can't wear/equip onto him. After all, he is still holding onto her cupcakes. Breeze is a little confused by Konrad's monologue, and she tries to keep up with him. On to the matter of her newly admission within the Coins, she lazily moans. " Do we have to plan everything? You just carry my things, and if we see something I want, we'll just buy it. That's the fun of adventures! We don't need you to bring us all down." "I suppose we can keep it simple. I can definitely do that for you. You're going to need something to hit people with, though. Our contracts very often mean we have to hit people. We kinda sorta got lucky before everything went to hell." ** (see spoiler) To his suggestion, she answers," I already know what weapon I will use. Looking forward to it!" and then proceeds to make stabbing motions. Once they reach the city hall, the fairy falls silent. The first thing Konrad notices are the three bodies on the ground, all covered with blankets to hide them. Sitting on one of the benches, and staring at the thinner silhouette, is Eralda's mentor. He doesn't appear to have noticed them. Konrad stands by the bard. "She showed real promise, with that voice. Can't imagine why anyone would come after her. She'd done nothing to no one. Just wanted to enjoy life, and help other people enjoy it."DiplomacyIf you've heard the aspirations and motivations of any singer, you've heard them all - generally speaking. I'm not trying to deceive him, I'm just playing dumb to see if he disagrees: does he think this was random? Does he think I know? Does he blame anyone? To evoke anything towards the effect I desire outside of what he'd naturally be inclined to do/say, I'm guessing Diplomacy would be the skill I'd have to use.- Zeiss:
** - If it sounds like I'm talking insensitively, I'm not - that's my 'all things to all people' personality at work, trying to 'speak her language', basically, in the manner I'm choosing to speak. The words are to the effect of hitting people "until they die". I'm sort of gauging how comfortable she is with death, or even talking about it. I will ask her about it directly once I've 'buried my dead', to put it one way.
Eralda's mentor doesn't reply to Konrad, or even look at him. In fact, he doesn't even seem to acknowledge his presence; he only sits on the bench, looking with stern eyes at the blanket covering his apprentice's body. Konrad looks his last on the dead, and leaves. He returns to the inn again to find Steve's room and waits there with drinks.

- "We're doing fine, all things considered," he answers, pouring a tankard of wine for Steve. "Getting paid with the money that oracle put down in advance would bring my spirits back up to break even. I'm sure our handler wouldn't mind parting with what he's supposed to pay us. After all, it won't do Miss Lavoie any good to return it to her."
One of the bottles is already open. Konrad's lips are dyed a shade ruddier than normal, and he swirls a tankard in his hand with a vigor that suggests it is not full, same with how far he tilts it when he takes a drink.
"Breeze doesn't seem to know how love orbs are made, only that she can make them by projecting her feelings into a ball of light, and voila - complete with glass like a snow globe has. I am certain it involves Weaving - it might even be just that, plus hearts and rainbows. I was suggesting to her a while back that she make a love orb so that we can see what happens if we break it open. We won't be here much longer, so when she's able to create one for any of us, I volunteer we shatter mine. It seems a small sacrifice for the academic pursuit of knowledge."
This is very obviously small-talk, but it seems to Konrad that Steve might have something to talk about besides business and the pleasure of drinking. |

- Breeze has retracted her wings, somehow, and is now lying down on a pillow, flapping her legs in the air. She listens intently to Konrad, and as soon as he finishes talking, she retorts, "You're really thick, aren't you? I told you I'm not making you a love globule, especially since you just said you're planning to break it."
For the first time since Konrad and Steve met her, she appears to genuinely feel insulted. |

I'm an explorer at heart, and if no one's feelings stand between me and something I'm curious about, I rush headlong toward it. I will never suggest it again."
Once they are able to move on, he reciprocates Steve's query. "You don't have to worry about how I'm doing. There is nothing new under the sun, and I have seen enough under it - in its light or in its shadow. What about you, Steve? What's on your mind?" |
