| Mihai frowns the more Konrad explains. He has stopped chewing altogether and is just staring at the thing on the table.

| Steve blinks several times while he processes the reveal. He then slides over a little and leans in to get a closer look at the weapon without picking it up. "Is it loaded right now?" |

| "No. I'm not going to demonstrate, as it makes an alarming sound when operated. Not as loud as a ship cannon, but significant. I was inspired with the idea during a certain fierce naval battle," he explains, being deliberately vague in the presence of the white mage.
Careful, Konrad. You nearly let it slip in front of Zenobiusz about the Elementals. "Enemy" works just fine in this context, but be careful. |

| Whoa. Steve picks up the hand cannon, takes a deep breath, and starts peppering Konrad with questions per usual while he studies it. "You said it takes practice to aim, have you been practicing? What's your effective range? How much force is this putting out? How did you keep it from exploding in your hand? How long does it take for you to reload the hand cannon after you fire it? Did Breeze help you make it? What's the weapon's name? Are you planning to enchant the ammunition like with arrows and quarrels? How many versions of this did it take to make this version? What kind of maintenance does it require?" |

| Konrad remembers the questions, but has trouble answering them in the order that they were asked. "Um, this is the first version. I drew sketches, then weaved each part separately, and this is what I assembled with the final parts. It doesn't have a name. It takes about 20 seconds to load. Breeze helped me test it, I made it myself. I have been practicing, in the weeks between its first construction and our final job, using Breeze's bubble of silence. The range is about 30 feet. I can enchant ammunition, and I do plan on it. To make sure the round fires and doesn't get stuck and possibly explode, I have to make sure I load the right amount of powder into the barrel for significant force to eject the bullet..."Konrad then answers the questions about force, stopping power, and gun maintenance, and while he does, Rory throws the Wikipedia page at Kolson. - Flintlock Pistol stats:
Damage: 1d10 Critical: 18-20 x2 Range: 30 feet Reload: 3 rounds Type: Piercing Weight: 2lbs

| Nadzieja examines the ‘hand cannon’ from a distance and listens attentively to Konrad's descriptions of its capabilities. Zenobiusz is a little more excited about this unusual weapon however. "Will you be using it during the Tournament?" he asks. |

| "If I need to, yes. I just might need to." He looks at Nadia while he floats everything he pulled out back beneath his coat. "Let me know when you're available to chat." |

| The rest of the party goes to rest while Konrad and Nadzieja go to another room similar to the one they just left. - Spoiler:
Nadzieja brings a magical torch with her and puts it in one of the sconces along the wall. She then asks, "So what did you want to talk about?"
Konrad looks thoughtful. "Before we get to that," he begins in Myrzen, "myself being acutely aware of the...'sensitive' nature of the things I said back there, I would like to know if our team quarters are protected from Scanning."
"Yes," she confirms, joining him in the native tongue. "Only for today though."
"Good. That's good." He relaxes, continuing the rest of the conversation with her in Myrzen. "What do you think about the weapon I created?"
The young woman stares at Konrad for a few moments before she breaks eye contact and begin to pace back and forth in the room. "I don't know yet. I see the advantages it has over bows, less so with crossbows, but I can't deny the potential..." She stops to ponder something. "I'd probably need to see it in action. So I could, you know, get a better idea."
"You might get to. If it could be improved upon, it would be indispensable in a war against the Elementals, and I do have some ideas for that. So, in the event that I expire, I wrote you in as its inheritor in my final testament."
Nadzieja gapes at Konrad, in complete shock. "You named me?"
He nods. When it looks to him like she might protest, he adds, "Before you say anything morbid, I do have a runner-up in the event the tournament finale goes sour."
"That's... a good idea." She eyes Konrad and asks, "Shouldn't this person get your invention instead of me?"
"I wanted someone much closer to the Homeland to have it. To clean this place up and get ready for the war."
"Hmm..." She considers the idea and nods. "It's probably a good idea. If you... well, if you die... I promise I'll make good use of it."
He smiles. "I don't plan to die, but I'm very sure you would, being very intelligent, focused and determined. Not all leaders have to be smart, but it's a good quality to find in one."
She raises an eyebrow, a little suspicious of the flattery. "I'm... flattered to hear you approve of me," she says, uncertain.
Konrad sighs. "I'm not trying to flirt again, Nadzieja. You have a beautiful mind, and before I forget to say it plainly, I find you very stunning. Yesterday, I was fake with you. I had no idea who you were, and I still don't know you very well, but I would like to. Can we at least be friends?"
She doesn't answer immediately, taking the time to think first. Finally, she crosses her arms and shrugs. "We can try. It might take a long time though; I'm not quick to make friends."
Konrad swallows in thought. "I can't stay long. I have to go to Luxus to stop a plot. Can I ask if there's a reason?"
"I just..." She searches for the right words. "To me, a real friend is someone you can trust completely. It's more than just being friendly with them."
"Really," he begins skeptically. "I understand that I'm a little infamous for saying that relationships need to be built on trust, and it's coming back to bite me, but since I'm on the receiving end..."
He pulls out the gun, holding it by the barrel in his upward-faced palm. She looks at the hand cannon and then back at Konrad, wondering where this is going.
"I taught myself Weaving to make a new creation the likes of which the world has never seen, and I've penned it underneath your name. Now I'm here with you, with my friends, after we risked our lives to spare those of our first opponents. Unless you think it's all a trick, I'm curious to hear what all this is worth to you."
Diplomacy 19 (AP)
Nadzieja's expression softens a little. After some hesitation, she decides to speak frankly. "I think this makes us allies. I can trust you with my life, and I think you trust me with yours. Right?"
He nods, and returns the gun back inside his coat.
"So what are you really asking? I told you we could try to become friends."
He pauses. "I guess what I want to know is what really lays at the end of 'try'."
She scratches the back of her head. "I don't know. But it sure sounds like you think I have a problem with you."
He squints a little. "You don't?"
"Uh, no, I don't." She pauses, thinking. "You really thought I did?"
"In some ways, yes." He sighs. "'Prove yourself to be a man I can admire'. It seems I owe you another apology, because I think I'm honestly losing my sanity over those words."
She chuckles a little. "Let's just go back to the others. We need the rest."
"Wait."
She stops in the middle of her stride, wondering what the red mage wants to say.
"Nadzieja, can I ask you a personal question?"
"...Depends on the question, I guess."
"What if I let you ask me one, too?"
"I still might not answer." She shrugs. "You can try though."
"What did happen to your parents?"
Nadzieja tenses up and crosses her arms again, Frowning. "That's not something I want to talk about."
He lowers his head for a moment, out of pity. "Okay. Do you have a question for me?"
"Not really, no." She turns her back to him, now in a sour mood. "Let's go." She reaches out to grab the magical torch, intent on return to the other room.
"Hey, wait a minute," he says, trying to catch up before she leaves with the only dang light in the room. "I'm sorry, that was out of line."
Without a word, she stops moving with her hand on the door knob. Konrad can only imagine what she looks like right now.
"I just...I'm sorry for whatever happened, and I'm sorry I made you remember."
He can't shake off the urge to comfort her, and at the risk of misreading her and getting bitten for it, he reaches out to gently touch her arm. Nadzieja stays quiet for a few more seconds, then turns to face Konrad again with a stiff expression as she tries to keep a lid on her emotions. With a deep breath, she says, "We have a battle to win. That's what matters right now. Can you focus on that?"
Sense Motive 29
He studies her for a moment. In spite of her attempt to keep a stiff upper lip, he can read her like a book: her anger, her sadness, her irritation, her concern. Concern? Concern for what, him? What about? She's tense, and she's clearly holding it all back just to keep talking. Then, he answers, "I can, when I know you'll be okay."
"Well, I'm not." She tightens her lips into a thin line. "I'm going back to the others. Stay here if you want." She moves to leave.
"Nadzieja, wait. You don't have to," he offers, "I'll go."
Unfortunately, she has already opened the door, and out she goes. Konrad follows her back to their room, thinking about what to say before they get there and deciding not to; she won't hear him, and it won't help. I'll make it up to you.
