Nick grabs his head with his free hand and shakes it clear of haze bunnies.

"He means yeah. That crap really caught us off-guard, though."

    Nick nods.

"Enjoy it while it lasts, Mute." - "Huh?" - "Don't remember? This is where i was gonna die."

Anne nods back at Nick and turns to Marcus to say, "We're good to go." She then looks at the others. "Does anybody needs me to heal them?"

She looks at May, Marcus, Sam, Rémi and Evrard. Edward is a little ahead of the group, his eyes fixed on the hallway while he starts to flex his hand on the handle of his sword.

Rémi says, "I'm fine. Let's get moving." He takes up position in the third spot of the marching order.

"May is ready." She moves to the sixth spot since she can move fast enough to cover either front or back.

"Then let's go," Marcus calmly states.

Right at this moment, the squad members hears a familiar voice coming from behind them.

"Hey guys! I'm back!"

The fairy has just flown through the large open iron doors of the entrance to the dome and is now heading straight for them. Once he's reached the party, he lands on May's shoulder, grabs her earlobe, and asks, "I sensed another wave of magic just now. Did it affect you again?"

The teenage boy looks determined, but seemingly unaffected by the last magical phenomenon.

"Felt like my head was filling up like a balloon," says Evrard.

Sam continues, "But we're fine. It didn't hurt you?"

"Well, I didn't feel good, but it was nothing like you," he replies before setting his gaze forward. "I think we should hurry."

The group agrees and once again, Samantha takes the lead, moving at least twenty meters ahead to escape the ruckus some of the squad members are making with their armor. The young rogue passes by several more dead soldiers, all of whom fought in the corridor to the death while the facility came to life.

The machines behind the walls hum stronger now. The closer they get to the center of the dome, the more stifling the atmosphere becomes. Until finally, they reach the center of the dome.

PostSubject: Re: 7th interlude: The Last Memory   7th interlude: The Last Memory - Page 6 Icon_minitimeSun 04 Jun 2023, 1:38 am

Because Smirk is capable of seeing in the dark, he is the one to open the doors and look behind them. What he sees are huge mechanical apparatuses that fill the room which are covered with woven runes that glow in the dark. Examining them more closely, they look like two giant pipes that head up towards the top of the dome. And to his right against the wall is a control panel of some sort.

Smirk shares his findings with the others, and after recalling her time working on the Shield project, Sam concludes that the control panels are not for the giant pipes, but for some sort of secondary hardware; in other words, something that controls either the lights, the doors, etc.

The group thus assumes that one of those control panels can unlock the large iron doors leading into the Core. Being the most qualified to manipulate this type of magitech, Sam approaches the control panel in the room on the right and gets to work. However, once she's finished, the squad members hear the sound of some kind of machinery in the hallway ahead of them powering down.

Samantha didn't unlock the doors, she realizes. She deactivated something, and she's not sure what it was. Most likely a fail safe that was connected to numerous traps of some kind.

Thinking the other panel will unlock the door, she hurries and proceeds to do the same thing in the other room. It is much easier this time now that she knows how to operate this panel, and after a few seconds, the squad members hear a loud buzz ring out throughout the corridor.

The doors then slide open.

What awaits them on the other side are dozens of soldiers and Imperial Guards. The ones near the door all have their weapons at the ready, but slowly begin to lower them when they realize that their would-be enemies are not mad like their compatriots outside. With no idea what to do, they look at their nearest superior for orders, but the man in question doesn't appear to know who the squad members are, and thus cannot make an informed decision about them.

Edward, Marcus, Anne and Jacob quickly lose interest in these men however when they lay their eyes on the room: at least 300 feet wide and 150 feet high, this dome is a marvel of architecture that contains giant pipes that run along the spherical wall as well as fat pillars that support its majestic ceiling. And in the center of the room is large cylindrical prison of glass that reaches for the ceiling and which is covered by woven runes of containment.

In it is the Elemental the squad retrieved from Zest's Gate.

"Jacob!"

This is Gab, Jacob's sister. She's floating in a cylindrical cage similar to the one the Elemental is, but smaller and thinner. When the squad members look around the room, they see the rest of the fairies imprisoned in identical prisons that are all connected to the top of the one the Elemental is in. Magical energies swirl within, bathing the whole room in colorful lights.

"Guys!"

Jacob flies to his sister's side and immediately attempts to break the glass, to no avail. The rest of his family call out for him.

"Jacob! You came for us!"

"They killed all of our friends!"

"It was them! They attacked our home!"

They then defiantly point at the Imperial guards standing on the other side of the room, near the machinery.

Arthur Hammerfist is among them, glaring at the squad members. Finlay Howe stands behind him, surprised by the squad's appearance, but more focused on his consoles than the sudden interruption.

The rest of the research team barely glance at them, too preoccupied as they are by their work.

The sight of Arthur angers and frightens Samantha, but she addresses the doctor in an even tone. "Dr. Howe. Slaughtering an entire town to draw us out is barbaric. It fits Arthur's profile. It would almost be a joke to even call it ancillary to the Dome project. Why did you give the order?"

Evrard stands several feet behind her, processing the forces arrayed against them and the bane of his merry existence in the far back, and maneuvering them and his allies in his mind, like pieces on a board.

The man doesn't even deign to look away from his console while he answers her. "I didn't give the order to attack the town; only the manor. I am sorry for what I did, but I'll make sure their deaths mean something."

He then resumes his work and gives instructions to his colleagues.

"Enough!" Arthur Hammerfist yells, causing the soldiers to slightly raise their weapons again. "You have the gall to come here, Usurper."

"You've caused enough trouble, brother," Edward answers.

"You're no brother of mine, bastard."

The two glare at each other, their eyes filled with rage.

Nick can't help but look around the room as he puts two and two together in his head. Then he and Smirk look at it other with a hint of dismay in their eyes before the latter turns to the Captain.

The whole corridor back there would have been ambush paradise for any defender – that’s page 24 of General Tactics and Strategy, yet you pulled your close-combat forces into this chokepoint where their effectiveness is cut down to a fraction. You knew you were killing everyone outside - every man, woman and child - the moment you pulled the lever.

Then he directs his attention to the real monster in the room.

So Howe, how's the Shield gonna protect you in the middle of this war? It was meant to save us all once His Imperial Majesty managed to negotiate a cease-fire or put us in a position of strength. Of course, that was until Patricide over there managed to turn all five nations against us! You think when they all get here, they'll be wanting to hug and kiss you? And as for the real Enemy, I'm sure this room full of Sword & Boarders with no perimeter defense whatsoever is gonna do wonders to keep you all safe, while the Shield comes down. How long is that gonna be, an hour? Five?

Smirk glances at all the Fairies being contained in the glass domes, then refocuses on Howe.

We're taking our friends back. I'm telling you nice right now, not for you but for these boys up front. If you make me go through them...” - Smirk shakes his head, as his voice becomes full of cold menace - "...i won't be nice anymore."

Arthur narrows his eyes at Nick and Smirk when they begin to speak, but after a short moment of consideration, he turns toward Howe and asks him a question. The hum in the room is too loud for the squad members to hear what he says, but Finlaw Howe answers him with a shake of the head. Once Smirk is finished, the researcher says to him, "You've failed to consider the obvious solution: to deploy the Shield over Medial, but not the rest of the empire."

The emperors gives the squad a wicked smile. "We will let the Elementals deal with these rebellious kingdoms, after which we will redeploy the Shield over the whole Archipelago and kill them all at once."

Jacob, Marcus and all the others widen their eyes in horror.

"You can't do that!" the fairy exclaims.

"This is crazy," Edward says. "It could take years, maybe even decades before the Elementals defeat the other kingdoms."

"Yes," Arthus says, pleased with himself. "But thanks to the time dilation effect of the Shield, years will pass on the outside while only months will pass on the inside. Once these rebels are defeated, the Empire will reemerge from the Shield, wipe out the rest of the Elementals, and restore control and order to the Archipelago." The emperor looks into the distance, a content smile on his face. "I wish you could be there to see it."

Smirk pipes up at the foot soldiers in the room - "So there you have it, folks. An evil patricidal man-child who usurped the Throne and his amoral mad scientist flunky - that's what you're all serving now. If you didn't have a hand in killing our families, i don't want your blood on mine, just... just stay out of it and we'll leave you alone. If you really want to be part of what comes next, though... well, you've gotten a lot more warning than all the poor bastards i've had to tear through in this whole damn war."

To this, Arthur simply says to his men, "Kill the intruders. If you don't, I will have you and your families executed."

After a moment of hesitation, the soldiers all raise their weapons at the party and begin marching in formation toward them.

  • ....:

    7th interlude: The Last Memory - Page 6 Sunnyw10

It’s hard to tell when an Aspect is crying. Our voice doesn’t come from lungs we don’t have, so it doesn’t break, and we don’t sniffle. The little elemental wisps that float out the sides of our eyes can change in intensity for a few different reasons, so a lot of people think it doesn’t happen at all. You have to know what you’re looking for.

    Go ahead! Kill Them!

Once the Emperor gave that order, there was no turning back. The soldiers advanced, desperate to save their families that they didn’t realize were already dead. Remi charged forward, Evrard cast his support spells, boosting everyone. May waited for her opening, Nick let fly, Sam bobbed and weaved, Anne cast Regen on those of them wading into the fray and Smirk unleashed the darkness on those he could reach. Jacob, he… he tried to reassure his siblings, telling them he would save them.

The soldiers, they braved forward. Some screamed in pain, falling one by one until they find Remi isolated and quickly swarm him. May jumps in, doing her lightning fast run around the enemy squad. Not knowing any better, they fall into her trap trying to go for the easy hit that never lands, only to be pulverized by her counter discipline.

The automatons move in, their arms like spinning blades, slashing indiscriminately at friend and foe alike, doing more damage to their own rank and file than of their actual targets.

Then Edward casts, boosting everyone’s speed and curing Remi before even the Regen kicks in. Then he pulls out Alvo’s sword and brings it down in a green flame on the target closest to Marcus, who swings and bashes and starts mowing down his former compatriots in short order.

All the while, Howe and the researchers keep doing their work, pushing the reactor higher as Gab and her family are slowly drained of their life.

What are you doing?! KILL THEM!

Arthur Hammerfist, that slime of a man, keeps whining and berating the Soldiers he refuses to reinforce or even spare from the friendly fire of his own marionettes. Keeping his own guard in reserve as his regulars get mowed down.

One of the automatons bears down on May. It would have sorely regretted it if it knew what that was, as every attempt to hit got thwarted and punished and then some, until the thing is barely standing before being finished off by a Shadow Flare from Smirk.

The researchers get more and more freaked out. More than one try to quit their post, only to be yelled at by Howe to get back to it. Sam yells at the imperial scientist, begging him to stop this. He ignores her.

All but impervious to any sword or spear that tries to reach her, May is bombarded by a volley of Drain spells that batter and suck the life out of her.

Kill the Monk! Now!” – Shouts the Imperial Captain of the Guard, in his shining armor as he hides behind his men in the rear.

The soldiers swarm and surround May, slashing and stabbing from all sides as they tighten around her. They all go wide, as the Monk leaps into the air and vaults over their heads to be healed by Anne before delivering her brutal counterattack.

Arthur gets impatient at his men getting thwarted, he starts complaining about it to Howe. As if in response, the Reactor surges in power as the hum of the monstrous machine gets louder and more menacing. As the flow of energy kicks up, drawing more power through its catalysts, the Fairies, they… they start screaming in agony.

Phil, the Dark Elemental that birthed Smirk through Nick, starts getting horribly agitated, pounding against its cage until a crack starts to appear.

Despairing over his screaming siblings, Jacob tries breaking one cage with his Earth cantrip, though it barely even makes a dent.

Soon enough, even the Captain urges his Emperor to let his guard advance, but Arthur Hammerfist would rather complain than give up his safety net.

The carnage drags on, until Nick decides enough is enough. In a desperate move to cut the head of the snake, Nick dashes forward, past the soldiers’ blades even as they cut at him, slides to a stop at a position with the narrowest clear shot at the Emperor. With his telekinesis, he floats two bolts that he’s carried all the way since his first mission to Shadowstep years ago. The weapon already armed, the Air Bolt goes in first. His target is just over thirty meters away, but for Nick it doesn’t matter. He squeezes the trigger until the bowstring snaps, and before he’s even confirmed the hit he’s already rearming and loading in the Bolt of Fire. He lets fly.

The bolts shoot out through the air at amazing speed, flying past the confounded Imperial Guards. Arthur is still whining at Howe, he doesn’t register the whizz through the air before the Wind Bolt stabs right through his throat. He doesn’t have time to process his own voice becoming a cracked gasp before the second bolt hits him square in the chest.

The Captain and Howe both stare at him in shock, only then does he think to let out a gurgled scream as the fire begins to spread. Not enough to finish him off.

Seeing that the Emperor didn’t go down, and horrified at having to keep mowing through the people in this room that least deserve it, Smirk finally breaks.

    ENOUGH OF THIS SHIT!!

Smirk vanishes as something happens to Nick on the far side of the room before a magical blackout envelopes him and the whole Imperial Guard. His hair becomes spiked, almost standing on end as his skin takes on this dark gray glow, his eyes go white as black sparks of elemental Darkness crackle all around him. He growls and he roars as he raises one arm and flings and invisible magical missile through the air. The imperial squad doesn’t know what hit them before a massive cross of Darkness detonates right under their feet, shooting up into the air in a thundering blast. Not missing a beat, Nick charges a second volley before he sends it thunderclapping through the air as the second cross tears through the second contingent, the Captain, and puts an end to the miserable existence of the vermin that Medial had been weak enough to call Emperor.

Back nearer the entrance, one of the black mages prepares to open on the party as two darkness-infused bolts shoot forth from the darkness and nail him in the chest and head, dropping him for good.

Men! On me!” – the Captain rallies – It’s an Aspect Spell! We search for the edge of the darkness!

The Guards do their best to maintain discipline, but the effect on everyone else is immediate. The researchers abandon their posts, running about in a panic.

The soldiers lose their momentum by the shock, giving Edward a free hit on another one of them that kills him before he hits the ground.

    Who’s next?!

Marcus however, decides this is the tipping point of their resolve. He relaxes a little but keeps his sword pointed at the soldiers - “Arthur Hammerfist is dead! Your true emperor has now taken his place!” – he points at Edward – “Stand down, and you may be spared.

This causes a rippling effect where many of the soldiers lose the will to fight. Many step away from May and Samantha, scared of them. Several of them stand down, causing others to protest. And yet, none of them attack. It's clear they're considering surrendering.

As for Phil… Phil continues to pound on the containment vessel. A low cracking sound can be heard every time he does. But Evrard, angry at this state of affairs as he curses out the… the scientists, he perceives something. As he realizes what will happen if this is allowed to continue, he gathers power for a spell volley and in the next instant he casts the strongest Protect and Shell spells he can muster on the cage. The spells fixate onto the structure, fortifying it against the Elemental’s battering.

Despite their captain’s leadership, the Imperial Guard doesn’t all manage to stay cohesive, as one of the crosses hits them so hard that even their reinforced armor doesn’t prevent them from breaking formation and scattering in all directions. The captain finally throws caution to the wind and breaks into a run - “The attack will go off again! Run until you're out of the darkness!

Well, c’mon now! You forgot me when you went after our families!!

Changing tack, Samantha darts for one of the cages to try and figure out how to pick them open, only to realize that with all the Magic running through them it’s very much impossible, not without shutting down the reactor first.

She looks at Jacob - “We have to shut down the Dome with all the terminals at the same time. The researchers know what to do, we need their help.

With a determined look, Jacob nods at Sam, showing that he understands the task ahead of them.

Looking for May, Sam yells above the screams, "May, we need the scientists to lower the power on all of these machines at the same time! The Enemy is about to get free!"

May kind of boggles in disbelief that she'll be able to convince any of them to help in time but she nonetheless says, "May try!"

May moves over to the Researchers to try to get them to help. "Hey!. You are going to be helping May to release the fairies now!"

After a second, one of the researchers replies, "W-what?!"

He's utterly in shock of what's happening. It's clear he wasn't expecting to stand on a battlefield. May grabs him by the lab coat and - "Hey, dipshit. You will help May release the fairies or she will be punching your head into mush like she did the soldiers!"

She holds her fist real close his face for emphasis.

"Al-alright!" the man responds, cowering before the woman who's so much smaller than him. "But we also need someone at the central console![/color]"

He warily prepares to move. His colleague hesitates, but May cracks her knuckles.

"May is very angry right now and going to punch the Imperial Guard into meat stains for what they did to our people. The only thing that that is going to keep you from joining them is if you help May to release the fairies. Choose wisely!"

The researchers give each other a look and seem about to argue about who should stay on the consoles here, but one slight threatening motion from May, and the two who ran here prepare to go back to their post.

Meanwhile back at the entrance, Edward, probably realizing the soldiers are just malleable enough now to actually obey him, moves inside the chamber and points his sword at the entrance while fixing his gaze on them - “"You want to live?! Then get the hell out of here!" The green fire around his blade grows brighter for a second. "Or stay and die."

Most likely seeming like a good offer, the soldiers file off and start leaving the room, not realizing stepping outside would destroy their minds.

Edward… you monster! By the Eight and the Two and the World Bender, is this who you always were!? Marcus, Anne, why aren’t you stopping them!?

But there’s no time to think, because Phil, he… he takes a second to examine the spells reinforcing the containment vessel, and then he does something no one could have predicted.

The next moment, the blanket of Darkness that Smirk cast gets away from him and moves like a cyclone towards the cage! The mass of energy becomes opaque to everyone, and fizzles and churns at Evrard’s reinforcement spells, eroding them at a frightening pace.

Evrard doesn’t give up however and he casts another wave of protection on the containment vessel, reinforcing it further but it immediately starts getting corroded again. It becomes a race of attrition, as both the mage and the Elemental fight for control of the cage.

As Jacob does his part to scare the researchers into compliance, Sam, having heard what Edward said and seeing the soldiers actually obeying, rushes out toward the White Mage nearest her – Hey wait, hold on!

The healer looks toward, half expecting to get stabbed in the gut.

"No, no, you're fine, listen: Don't leave the Dome! It's not safe! Whatever you do, don't walk outside the building! You'll lose your minds to Madness, you've got to tell them!"
The white mage's eyes widen in horror. "No..." she whispers. "Is-is that what the Aspect meant...? But our families..."

She looks back at her compatriots who are attempting to flee down the corridor. She then goes after them, trying to get their attention.

"Hurry!" Sam holds the horror of that realization back until she turns away, and curses the situation, curses out Arthur beyond the grave, rushing back to the terminal.

    "Fuck... oh, fuck..."

Samantha is pretty sure she can operate the terminal, but she realizes they're connected to a main hub somewhere, and whoever controls that is the one who supervises the energy levels for everyone. In short, Howe oversaw everything and gave instructions through the console on what to do.

The would-be Empress looks up from the machine again to command her allies. "Anne, I need your help over here. Ed, give her a boost!"

    On it!

    "Marcus, back him up!"

Nick takes a breath and balls his hands into fists, then ROARS at Phil as the Darkness loses its hold on his allies. Then he turns toward the Guards and shouts "Remi, get back!!" and blasts one final cross on the group of Imperial Guards, superimposing them both to break through their armor dampening.

Anne moves next to Samantha and asks her, "What do you need me to do?"

"I'll show you how to use this thing, and Jacob will tell you what to do and when. This is the only way we can get them out."

    "Understood!"

The rest of the guards stumble out of Smirk’s massive cross. May wastes no time going after the captain and his men. Marcus rushes in to help her.

Meanwhile, Phil’s hold on the Darkness is diminished but not severed, as it suddenly splits into four separate clouds. What he planned to do with them I don’t know, but he takes one last swing at the the cage, and though the structure holds the reinforcement spells finally break for good.

Until Evrard charges up another volley, casts at the containment vessel and reinforces the cage all over again. Maybe it’s out of anger or desperation and it’s hard to tell in lieu of an actual voice, but Phil… screams.

While this is happening, down the corridor, that healer lady should have been having some luck convincing at least some of her comrades to save themselves and don’t go outside. We’ll never know how many she might have saved, because then… then the party hears screaming as a wave of fire washes over them.

When Samantha and Anne look at the entrance, they see a small Elemental a fire looking back at them amidst the corpses of the fallen soldiers. Those who survive do the very worst thing they possible could and flee down the hallway toward the exit.

Smirk had feared one or multiple Green Mages might have appeared to thwart the Shield’s activation. He never counted on the Mimic itself being in Medial.

Sam’s heart leaps out of her chest – "We need backup! Fire Elemental!"

The Mimic advances on the group, but Sam’s call gets an answer as Nick rushes in to face the King Elemental. He knows there’s no way they can free the Fairies while holding off Jerry and Phil, but Smirk has more than one tool in his arsenal. Charging up his power, Smirk shoots his Black Nail attack at the Mimic. The damage isn’t anywhere near grievous, but the magical spikes stab through and into the ground, binding the Mimic in place and preventing it from entering the dome chamber.

    "Anne, get back!"

    "I know!"

"Edward, get up to to Howe's hub and tell those lab coats to shut the gate!"

    "Get them moving!"

Edward nods at them both and rushes over to the central hub.

Consumed by his siblings’ agony, Jacob doesn't notice that his past torturer has now appeared, and he goes to convince more researchers to help.

Over near the east wall, May keeps bobbing and weaving past the soldiers, looking for an opening to strike the captain as Marcus backs her up.

"Don't take the bait! Attack on my command!" – he commands, but out of the corner of his eye he then catches sight of the little fireball standing at the entrance. He then shifts his gaze to the men spread out across the room. He sees how tired and wounded they are, and after a short moment of consideration, he relaxes his body and closes his eyes.

Two seconds later, he slits his own throat and falls to the ground.

His men fall into complete disarray, fleeing every which way they can. Losing all composure, they become easy prey for May and Marcus and Remi to pick off.

Edward runs to the control center, but cannot find the terminal that controls the iron door. He demands the researchers tell him where it is, as they freak out and cower at the red mage's sudden appearance, begging to be spared.

In the cage, however, Phil wasn’t done and wasn’t willing to sit and take it. Maybe he hadn’t realized the party was trying to lower the power, maybe inflicting as much damage as possible on Humanity was its own reward and worth anything, we’ll never know.

The remnants of the magical clouds of darkness that finally dissipate completely, but with it, the Elemental also does something unexpected: it begins to assault the cage not with physical punches anymore, but by shooting a beam of elemental energy at it.

The beam is so strong, the squad members notice the Elemental is also diminishing considerably in size. Then, a huge crack appears on the cage, breaking some of the protective runes on it.

The result is disastrous. Evrard feels it immediately, the current of Raw Magic seeping into the room and washing through his head, threatening to unravel his sanity. He doesn’t let up however, as he stills his breathing and stubbornly casts yet another reinforcement at the cage’s protection, as the beam of Darkness discharges relentlessly.

Distracted by this, Nick loses his concentration momentarily, enough to not notice the Mimic charging a massive fireball before hurling it right at him. Nick can’t react in time to protect himself and the fireball blasts right against his chest, but what should have been a massive injury is oddly thwarted as the elemental energy pulsing through him repels against the blaze, heavily mitigating the damage.

    "Urgh...! Nice shot, asshole."

The Mimic then tries to advance, but Smirk’s Black Nail holds fast, stopping the Fire Elemental dead in its tracks.

Nick then charges Blackout and shoots it at the Elemental, as the Darkness crashes into it and starts to sizzle, disrupting its power. Not done with his defiance, Nick rearms the crossbow and lets fly, but all his lightning quick reloads take their toll once again as the weapon misaligns, causing the bolt to go wide. Nick punches the flight groove hard on the side to force-correct the familiar upgripe as his telekinesis is already pulling back the latch for another shot. He lets fly and it strikes true this time, the dark-infused bolt striking right against the Elemental’s centermass.

Remi knocks down another Guard and cleaves right through him, sending the rest of his comrades fleeing in a panic.

Jacob returns toward the battlefield and momentarily freezes when he realizes that the Mimic is here. But then, just as quickly as he froze, he continues to the control center and proceeds to intimidate the researchers into helping to regulate the energy levels. One of the researchers begins to protest, but when Jacob chucks a small fireball at his face, burning him severely, the researcher changes his mind and joins his colleagues in their efforts to stabilize the Core.

Sam’s knowledge of Arcana, combined with her observation of the Researchers' current efforts to stabilize the Core, allows her to understand how to operate these consoles, at least for the immediate purpose of saving the fairies.

"I know what to do, we need an operator on each console!"

Meanwhile, she hears one of the researchers who Jacob just intimidated - "Uh, stabilizing! But... There's a leak! By the Eight, there's a leak!"

"Then hurry up and get the power down fast!"

    "Leave that to me!"

"Not before we seal that leak!" another researcher says. "Or it'll blow up the whole thing!"

"Aw fucking great, Phil! Hey lab coat, how do we fix the leak!?"

"I'm a Weaver, I'll do it" - says Evrard, fighting off the cobwebs layering on his mind and the headache from the radiation.

    "Lemme take point on that!"

About Phil, however… I don’t know if it was panic that made him do what he did. Maybe he didn’t notice his leader arriving to free him, maybe he didn’t notice the party trying desperately to lower the power, maybe he didn’t have the patience to let Evrard’s spells just wear off. Whatever it was, he hadn't stopped shooting its beam of Darkness energy at the cage. He’d just kept shrinking in size ever since he started. Until finally, he completely spens himself and disappears completely, but not before widening the crack in the prison.

Phil is now dead. It shouldn’t feel bad that such a monster got even a taste of what it did to countless green Mages and Fairies, and Aspects just like me and Smirk – things that make my skin crawl when I let myself imagine them even a little. But I felt sorrow. I don’t know why, but I did. Dying trapped in a cage like that… it was no way to go. Which made what happened next all the more agonizing, as without Phil there to draw power through, the Reactor then immediately started draining it all through the Fairies.

They scream. Horribly, even worse than before, as their little bodies begin to change into elemental energy.

"The—the whole energy levels are off-balance! We have to draw everything from the fairies or it will kill them!"

    "What?!" Jacob shouts.

    "The fuck!?"

Sam can't believe what she's hearing. "That will kill them anyway!"

"We've built this for one Elemental and twelve fairies!" one of the female researchers responds. "Now the Elemental is gone! Don't you get it?!"

One of her colleagues, calmer than the others, adds, "Imagine a scale with the Elemental at one en--"

Nick cuts him off - "Fuck, just do whatever it takes to keep them alive!!"

It’s then that Sam sees the buttons to control the iron door near the central console. It's right next to where Howe's corpse lies.

    "There! That controls the door!"

Hearing that, Edward lunges for the switch. The Iron door finally slides shut in front of the Mimic, trapping it outside.

As soon as Edward pushes the button, the iron door begins to close, trapping the Mimic on the other side. At the same time, May finishes the last of the Imperial Guards who are fleeing from her while the researchers do their best to stabilize the energy levels of the Shield.

"Here's how it is," the calmest of the researchers says, his eyes darting across the room as he tries to stand still. "The machine is trying to draw power from the Elemental, but it's dead. And because of the machine's current parameters, some of that energy we are drawing is going back toward the fairies. It's tearing them apart! Look!"

He points at the closest fairy—the one named Luka—and the squad members can see his body beginning to turn into the eight Elements.

"We can stop the machine from reverting them to their Elemental form. But we need to start drawing power from them exclusively."

Jacob looks at his friends, not sure what to do.

"Do whatever it takes to save them, and do it now!"

Nick rushes over to... he winces at the thought of Phil dying trapped in that cage, despite everything the bastard did to him and everyone else in the Archipelago. Fucker deserved no better, but he still felt... wrong.

No matter, and no time to think about it now, not while Gab and the Fairies were being torn apart. Nirk focuses his Magic and begins trying to mend the tear in the cage.

Sam pulls out her magical ring and hands it to the man with the explanation for why her friends are suffering. "Put this on and swear to me everything you said is true."

Meanwhile, Evrard joins Nick at the giant container to help.

Samantha's ring begins to work its magic, and the researcher, who apparently understands what's happening, quickly says, "I—I swear that everything I just told you is true. This is the only way to save the fairies." The man then catches himself. "The only way that I know of!"

Meanwhile, Nick—who is still imbued with Smirk's energy—begins to work on the crack in the Elemental's cage. Evrard comes to offer his assistance, and together, they examine the extent of the damages.

It's not good. Not good at all. A large amount of raw magic is leaking from this cage, and both Nick and Evrard realize that it will soon flood the entire room. Already, they can feel it gnawing at their sanity. By their estimation, they have five, maybe six minutes before everyone in this room turns mad. Furthermore, there's so much raw magic leaking from this crack, it cancels their attempts to fix it. They need to power down the Core first.

Samantha moves to the correct terminal and, as her stomach and her heart both sink like stones, she alters its functions and commands to the other terminals. "It had better do!"
