"The thing i told you about before, the spell that would have warped our minds into being their slaves, there's a lot more to it. What they do is, they shove a magical Orb into your head, about this big. Normally, those things are harmless; at least they were when Breeze made some for us. They merge with your mind and protect you from all kinds of crazy Magic out there that can mess with your head - and they've come in handy more than once. And when you get a Green Mage to wear it, they also do something else for you: They protect your mind from being enslaved by the Elemental that empowered you."

"That's something every Elemental can do at will, and have been doing ever since they first made contact with Humanity. Every time one of them shares their power with a Human, they gain an unwitting, unwilling slave. That's what caused the War with the Empire, it wasn't King Axon's fault that he decided to attack that Embassy in order to plunge the Archipelago into war. It wasn't Duma's fault that had he made First, he would have used Myr for very much the same purpose. And it isn't Lady Venator's fault now that she's planning to use tomorrow's biannual Ball to overthrow the King and take control of Emerald; but that's what she's doing, and she has to be stopped. This is what the Coins have been fighting for the past two hundred years."

The more Mihai speaks, the higher Kaja's eyebrows go, and by the time he's finished talking, her mouth is hanging wide open. She's at a loss for words for nearly a minute, until finally, she asks a question. "I don't understand. Why would the Elementals do that?"

"We don't really..." - he struggles for the words - "...we know bits and pieces. They don't think like us, they're a hive mind that doesn't really have any concept of morality. They looked at our history and decided Humans must die, and so they do it without any animus."

He thinks for a second - "Well, except for their leader, a Fire Elemental they call the Mimic. It thinks like an individual, isolated itself for... i guess years, in order to learn how we think. It's made it a sadistic psycho, and its abilities are insane. You could kill a summoner possessed by it, and the Aspect would just keep on going."

Kaja narrows her eyes and frowns. "...I see. And they're so dangerous, you're willing to team up with the people who've kidnapped your friends?"

Segel listens with a grave expression, and stays silent.

"They're kill-all-humanity dangerous. Only reason they're going slow about it is they think they've got the drop on all of us, but after we cured Duma back at the Arena they're stepping it up. We would cure the Duchess as well, but that was our last clean Orb - which brings me back to the reason we told you about this, Kaja. When someone has worn an Orb long enough, it absorbs and stores a perfect copy of their consciousness. We tried asking Duma for his Orb back, but it was already attuned to his mind; if we'd used it on Venator now, she would have essentially become him."

He gives her a second to absorb that.

"To us, that's a problem. To the Coins, it's a bonus. They use that property to essentially extend themselves throughout the centuries, taking people and using their bodies as vessels. And once it's done, it's over; your mind is gone forever and replaced by theirs. If we hadn't had Orbs of our own already, that's what would have happened to us; but even as it is, we feel the effects of it every day. And until we find Breeze, we're gonna keep feeling it - and it's gotten worse. Fedler had it the worst, the mind inside her Orb was more experienced and took over her body by the time we'd regained consciousness, but i know she's still in there."

"To be fair, i don't think they'll try anything like that with you tomorrow, they can't afford it. But i'm not about to let you into their company none the wiser, they're not the sort of people you turn your back to."

"They're amazing." Konrad lights up a little at the topic. "They are each an amalgam of energy representing the eight elements bound together by a means no one has been able to figure out."

He describes the appearance of a love globule with his hands and talk of the manifestations of the orbs swirling, ebbing, and flowing around each other in a heterogenous mixture, with no physical components. The strength of the magic contained with in, never dissipating.

"The fairies call them 'love globules', because they are able to literally add their feelings for an intended recipient into the orb. And the recipient gets to feel them for himself, when they first use them, or when there's a change in the way the fairy views him. If I had time and mana to spare, I would show you. Unfortunately, we have somewhere else to be, shortly."

"I understand. As long as I know what to watch out for, I think we'll be okay."

The warrior woman ponders this revelation, somewhat disturbed by it. Segel also seems to be in deep reflection, but of a different kind. After all, he already knew most of what he's heard today, except for the part about the Coins.

"We don't think the Coins branches are completely in line with each other, or at least not really communicating. The Highwind office knew we had our own Orbs, but Reeves had no idea. If he did, he never would have tried it on us; that's just asking for trouble. We're cooperating with the Emerald branch now because we're giving them the benefit of the doubt, but we know they do it too. Some of them have scruples but not very many; not in our experience."

He ponders for a second, then adds - "We don't know exactly what happens when you're invaded by a foreign Orb and you're not protected, but there's some things we've been able to gather. Normally, we'd be able to pull our own Orbs out at will - by literally willing it. Right now, the Orbs they forced into us are having some reaction with ours and seem jammed in place, so Breeze is our only hope. Also, they only seem to do their memory thing when you're unconscious. So if by some reason the worst happens, stay awake and will them out. You can pull someone else's out too by willing it into your hand. If there's a Fairy nearby, ask them for help - they all have some ability to pull them out as well."

Konrad nods. "Yes. We should be close to wrapping up soon. As to where we'll be going tonight: the leader of the Vigilate is supposed to be commanding the duchess' allied troops. We'll be kidnapping him tonight, and seeing if we can commit a little sabotage on the side. No doubt you have heard about the curfew and the lockdown. That is part of the coup as well. We're in disguise because Evander wants to see us, since we managed to resolve the conflict with the flying snake from the forest."

He gives Kaja the names of the folks in charge of the defense: the ones whom they met with "Julia" at their secret meeting. Then, the Myrzen mage outlines the plan that they agreed upon, and the total number of combatants on both sides, slipping in a straight-faced albeit flattering comment about how the elites should help them even the odds. But, just in case, the party hopes to ask another third party to get involved, which he does not name.

"IF we secure their help, we'll let you know when we see you again tomorrow. Lastly, there is just one detail we haven't quite agreed upon, on our end. Once you're smuggled into the Grand Ward, which way do you feel is best to reach the island? Some of us thought we would send you by boat. There's also the possibility of a frontal assault from the gates, or swimming. Both to which I am not partial..."

"There might be a third option. That giant Serpent people are talking about, he's actually sentient - can talk and everything; his name's Eltsuihlul. The Golden Legion killed his mate and kidnapped his cub, on the orders of some Noble moron. We helped him save the child and now he's grateful for it. Maybe we can ask him to help you sneak into the palace, he's got some Special Snake Powers that let him sneak across town undetected."

Mihai blinks at his own words.

"Problem is, he's in the forest. And the Curfew's gonna make it hard for us to reach him. But if he can lend you a... hand, you could probably just walk right past the Front Gate and no one would notice. Either way, there's a big garden you guys can hide in till it's time. I got some maps here with the palace layout, you guys can study them and figure out the best way to reach the ball room. The Service Area seems like a good bet, from what i've seen. Also, i'll give you a communicator you can use to contact us if you're in trouble. Not sure what's the range on the thing, but you should be able to reach us from anywhere in the palace grounds."

Mihai scratches his head in embarrassment - "Sorry. We've had to process so much crazy crap in the past few days, it's becoming kind of a blur."

He checks himself and clears his throat - "The Serpent... well, in short, yes. It took some back and forth, but we managed to pause in between the hacking and the biting to parlay. Really just wanted his kid back, and since it was the Golden Legion's fault for attacking his family in the first place..." - he shrugs - "...one thing sort of led to the other, and we ended up stopping the fight before anyone else got killed."

"He's not that hard to relate to, really."

Kaja whistles. "You're moving up in the world. No wonder Nadzieja sent us with you."

"Won't she mind that you'll be meddling with another country's affairs?" Segel asks.

"I guarantee you that, had she known about this, she would have sent even more warriors with us." With a confident smirk, the Myrzen woman crosses her arms and says, "So, how about you show us those maps and tell us more about our part in it?"

"Your part of the plan isn't particularly complicated but it depends on if we are able to secure Elt's help or not. If we are able to secure the feathered serpent's help, you should be able to walk through the front gate, invisible to all others. If not, you'll be crossing the river and proceeding to the cliffs here."

Steve points to the appropriate point on the map. "Using climbing gear, you and your unit will scale the cliff and enter the palace grounds. This is where the two plans converge. We'll need you to keep out of sight until the fighting starts, where you'll hopefully be able to make a difference. We don't really know what will happen at the party, but we do have a communicator for you that will let us communicate once the action starts, so don't be surprised if we need some backup.

"The river crossing is one of the trickier parts, as all boat traffic has been banned. Perhaps you could swim it? Um, that's as far as we've gotten, any ideas on your part are more than welcome."

"The water is too cold at this time of year to swim. Maybe if we had the right gear, but... no, we don't have time for that." Kaja examines the maps for a moment. "Boats. That's the only way to get across. We'll go under the cover of darkness, and if that rain continues until tomorrow, then I think we'll have a good chance to get in undetected. And if you can get that serpent of yours to help us, then all the better. When's that second-in-command supposed to come?"
